Battersea Boot Beats!

Yesterday I went to the Battersea Car Boot sale in the blistering sunshine. I went a couple of years ago with my mum and I remember not being too impressed...however these things always come down to luck. All and sundrine turned out for the boot. The queue to get in was bad enough. I am a born rummager so clearly was in my element but if sifting through someone elses junk sounds like hell then don't hang here. I was really impressed with the bargains that were to be had. I would definitely go again and this time take more cash. I bought a fantastic dress that was apparently from a sample sale and a vintage belt. I pray that either purchase wasn't actually from Primark....for £6 though I am not too bothered.

The Wonder land of Mervyn Peake

Dad has been a major fan of Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) since his tutor introduced him to his works at the tender age of 17. Ever since, my dad has been mesmerized with Peake's writings, illustrations and art. It is easy to understand why. Novels such as Gormenghast are complete masterpieces. As are his paintings and illustrations.

If you haven't seen Alice in Wonderland yet, then you must. But first have a look at the original drawings that Peake created for the original book. Tim Burton has clearly taken some inspiration from these incredible fantastical drawings.

As I read in The Observer at the weekend, previously unseen private letters have been handed over to the British Library. Apparently they have revealed crucial influences on the writers troubled imagination. There is also an unpublished sequel to the Gormenghast Trilogy written by Maeve Gilmore, Peake's widow that was discovered by Peake's granddaughter in the attic earlier this year.

The drawings and letters will be available to students and researchers so my dad best get in there soon. Exciting stuff for someone who has analysed all there is to see of this great artists work.

Oi You on Saturday was one of those parties that should not have been missed. Tunes flowed all night and so I bounced for what felt like hours. The venue on Kingsland Road will be hosting many more raves like this. It was the ideal venue to get down and diiiirty. A lot of fun was had all round plus I bumped into a lot of old faces. Some were good, others not as good. A clear highlight was the old skool garage classics. Popping.

Last night I went life drawing at The Book Club and what a treat it was. For your £6 you get all of your equipment plus a glass of wine. How divine. The tutor provides inspiration from various artists each week. Last night it was Andres Bedoya and next week it is Helmut Newton's turn. The male model strutted several poses and I had full on vision if you get me.

I am working from home and listening to new music on a site called 22
Tracks in particular a track from Gorillaz called “Empire Ants”
featuring Little Dragon taken from the new Plastic Beach album...very

I love to present on TV and radio because...
It is a job I enjoy and if you like what you do it doesn’t have to
feel like work. Plus as a kid I wanted to be a young Michael Jackson
but I can’t sing so this is the next best thing!

What is your proudest moment in life so far?
Wow I haven't really thought about it there are a few...I/we have won
radio awards, had a my face posted on the side of bus, and featured in
the national press for my achievements but I have to say moving out of
my mums home was a big thing to me...sounds silly I know.

What are your vices?
Cake and Girls (Dip Halle Berry in some icing and I am in trouble)!!

Best music track to listen to to get the creative juices flowing...
I find anything from Miles Davis helps me if I need to think I can
not listen to anything with words so instrumental Jazz is the best
thing for me and a little brain....

People who know me, know that I love a market and anything thrifty. If I can riffle and rummage my way through a room then I am really, really happy. South London has a lot to boast about. 1, I am born and bread from this region, 2, garage raves are on the up, 3, it is home to the best market in London. Haynes Lane Market is hidden away in Crystal Palace, and boy what a gem it is. I almost don't want to share my secret but if you love a market then you need to represent. This is how a thrift market should look and feel. There are plenty of bargains to be had from books, clothes, furniture, bric a brac and jewellery. Recently I bought some amazing 1950s plates and bowls; 17 of them set me back a mere £25. Go check it out for yourself. If you have time then I would suggest exploring the local shops in the area too- there are some real beauties to be had.

Where did the name Little Comets come from?

Erm.... it is a really terrible story and one which makes me sound a bit daft... my friend had the name petite comete on msn messenger or something like that. Even though I did French for 5 years I felt the need to whack it into a translator to find out what comete meant. After being astounded at not being perceptive, I thought hmmm that is an ok name for a band...

You are fans of guerrilla gigs - which has been the best guerrilla gig to date?

We did one in a bakery aisle at Marks and Spencer's which was pretty good, it was nearly a national event in Newcastle as four police cars were scrambled to the scene... We did this gig on a tram in Sheffield which when we'd finished people followed us down the street to the gig singing.... The worst was when we were attacked by a maniacal Irish lecture who was 6'4" and foaming. He whacked Mickey but fortunately Mark saved him.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

Hmmmm I wanted to be a footballer or a fireman.... Mickey still wants to be a Nobel Prize winning scientist. Mark used to whack pots and pans in the kitchen when he was two so I think he has fallen on his feet. As for Matt, I've never asked him so would have to hazard a guess - maybe a sailor.

Her style is something to keep a watchful eye on too. Terry O'Neil New and Unseen

Last night I went to a private viewing of a new Terry O'Neil exhibition at the Chris Beetles Gallery. I have been to several of these events at this gallery and seen the works by Mervyn Peake and Lichfield whilst sipping champagne and surrounding myself with the super elite who have just had supper at The Wolsey.

The viewing was fantastic- for one I wish I had experienced the '60s and hung out with Audrey and Bridget and even Frank. Terry O'Neil is well known for shooting these three in particular. He is one of Britain's most celebrated photographers and this is the first time he has exhibited at the Chris Beetles Gallery. The majority of the prints have not been seen before, an exciting prospect for fans of fashion photography.

The celebrity world as we know it today is full of nobody's who have little and no talent. I am so sick of leafing through the weekly mags portraying these women and telling me where they buy their cheap dresses from. In contrast, during Terry's peak, the celebs who he worked with had talent. From Audrey Hepburn frolicking in water whilst on set of 'Two For the Road' or The Rolling Stones in make up back stage, they all had something to shout about. There is a sense of charm, beauty and calm with all of his work mirroring that of Lord Snowdon.

Terry O'Neil is now 71 years old and is still friends with many of his subjects, providing the ultimate artist/ celebrity combination.

If you have a chance then definitely go and see a true masters work.

There are editions of 50, signed and numbered by O'Neil so if you have the cash, prices start from £1,850 and go up to £6,500.

I have been organising this party since I joined the BSA team in October...The Apple Bottoms AW10 launch party at No 5 Cavendish Square was certainly one to remember. The event was held on 14th February where VIP celebrities and guests were treated to Camitz Sparkling Vodka throughout the evening while the face of Apple Bottoms, DJ Sassy spun the finest of tunes to get the party started. WAH Nails team provided some super hot embellished Apple nails to complete the glamorous event. Guests were treated to a goodie bag that was over spilling with Apple Bottoms product, Camitz Sparkling Vodka limited edition bags, Sleek make up and hair products courtesy of Andrew Collinge. This was definitely a night to remember. Pow, what a party.

Another magazine is hitting our shelves and inbox's...is that a sigh I hear? Hang on and listen up... I think this one is a little different. Test Magazine is sure to make you sit up. According to their website, 'Test is a visual platform that fuses a combination of new and established artists on a constantly changing series of image-led projects. Its name is derived from the concept of a “test shoot”, where creative teams are formed to show the best of their abilities.' These 'creatives' vary from models including Clara Settie, fashion designers such as Dr Noki (see his shoot above) and styling by Leith Clerk. All are here to show what they do best and excel in their own fields without any restrictions. The results are quite special.

The evolving website is a haven for most of us searching something that is unique and quite simply, clever.

Dennis Lye is the most adorable magazine editor. By day he works in the marketing department at River Island and by night he squeezes in the time and creates an online magazine called Were Worth It Too (WWIT). Seriously, it is a wonder how this boy breathes, let alone sleeps!

What are you doing right now?

Currently brainstorming my life! Haha..i have a list for a list to juggle my
day job, the magazine and personal life..to keep on top of things I
definitely need to keep it tight and know exactly what needs to be done..

I love to edit a magazine because...

It gives me a creative outlet, I am an artistic person and just so happens
I've found something that I can channel it through and everything I'm doing
and have done are related to where I want to do. So editing a magazine lets
me exercise my eye, and fine tune my skill that is going to be invaluable to
me in the future especially in the industry. Having touched on all these
skills will give me an edge.

What is your proudest moment in life so far?

So far, getting a job at River Island due to honest hard work, and having
been recognised for my potential is really good to know. I got HERE all
because of me, and only me.

What are your vices?

Snack too much, eat when I'm happy, eat when I'm stressed! Olives, crisps,
Nandos...other than that..i have a insane collection of magazines..i like a
good read..they speak to same language to me.. I need it for inspiration.

Currently it's Magic FM...makes me feel like there's no rush to get anything
done.

What does 2010 hold?

Everything and anything! On a realistic note, I do hope for big things, the
magazine to get better...more readers more experiences, meeting more

Wow- Chanel clogs have graced the front cover of March's edition of British Vogue. The beautiful Alexa Cheung certainly knows how to wear them and looks elegantly sexy. I on the other hand will most likely resemble a Dutch milk made. The Olson twins and 90210 star Shenae Grimes are already working it. I remember buying a pair of white clogs from Topshop when I was about 10. They were amazing and I was completely obsessed with them then....I feel a similar urge now. I need them in my life. Ill wait a little longer to purchase a pair. I feel Chanel may be way out of my price reach. For now I'll just dribble and fantasise over these ones...

Having featured on the festival circuit and supported Chris Brown and Beyonce (!!), North Londoner Zarif truley is one to watch. Right now I just got home from being in the studio with Danny Byrd and I'm about to settle down to watch Glee, my new guilty pleasure. It's such feel good tv!

I like to sing because it's the most fun thing anyone can ever do in the whole world ever! I've done it forever and it's all I've ever wanted to do.

I like to illustrate because...
Sometimes a picture can tell much more much quicker than writing a whole paragraph of explanation. I love the immediacy, plus I love any excuse to get out the felt-tips and feel like a kid again!

What is your proudest moment in life so far?
I think it would have to be getting picked to support Beyonce on her UK tour. I had actually bought myself a ticket to the concert already, having no idea that I would ever be supporting her! So that was amazing, the whole tour was a surreal and brilliant experience.

What are your vices?
Coffee and chocolate! I'm not much of a bad girl so I guess those vices aren't that bad, but I do exist on caffeine and sugar especially if I'm writing, I need to be hyper.

Best music track to listen to to get the creative juices flowing...
Ooh that's a hard one. I find listening to new music always gets me going, it doesn't even matter what genre. When I listen to songs I've loved for ages I just get bogged down in thinking "how could I ever write anything this good??!!" so I end up not writing anything! New exciting music definitely helps.

What does 2010 hold?
I'm really excited because it's the year I will finally be releasing my first album! I did so much touring last year that it was hard to find the time to finish it, but now it's all done and I'm literally bouncing off the walls, I can't wait! The first single is called Box Of Secrets which is the title track of the album, and it's out in April.

Louisa Gray

Since I met Louisa, I have always been transfixed and mesmerised by her illustrations. Scrap that, I would say slightly obsessed. I absolutely adore her work for their collage approach to illustration. The illustrations and graphics that Louisa creates are beautiful, kitsch and clever. Using vintage photographs layered on acidic coloured paper makes something that simply makes you smile to look at.

Louisa has just completed a Masters in Communication Design at Central Saint Martins School of Art. Her work centres around appreciating the bizarre in an attempt to escape the banal. She loves saturated colour, cutting and pasting, and collecting things; to produce work with an eclectic and handmade approach.

I saw Louisa last night at her gorgeous little house in Clapham Junction...

What are you doing right now?

Not doing what I should be.

I love to illustrate because...

It takes my mind of things. It is a form of escapism.

What is your proudest moment in life so far?

Seeing my work on the wall at the Mall Galleries for my St. Martins MA show.

Seeing my illustration for Lolita in print.

What are your vices?

Talking, markets, anything Mexican, lace, leopard print, old photographs, Thai food and my new riding boots.

Double Denim rules...

The double denim look has been sweeping over London town since the summer. The kids at Work It certainly know how to (ahem) work it when it comes to layering denim. Now it has well and truly established itself on the catwalks and high street too. For me, as soon as a trend hits Topshop, that is when you stop embracing it. But if you follow the rules carefully, you can still look hot for SS10.

If you have a boyfriend then try not to look like Britters and Justin circa 1996...Ha! That full length denim dress is too much.

Do look to Chloe's SS10 collection but with a hint of the 80s double denim super look. Et voila. Hot to denim trot.

Kate Moss for Longchamp

If you know me, then you will know that I idolise Kate Moss. She is a unique style icon with an ability to wear fashion with the London Look that I try so hard to create.

I recently read a biography on Kate and I know that she has always longed to further her career and move away from modelling, hence the major Topshop deal. Now she has worked with Longchamp and created a bag collection. It is ok. The bags look as though they are made from the most beautiful leather...but that is about it. Still, Kate can do no wrong to me.

I love Ebay. I could trawl the website day in day out if I could. The bargains that are available now are obscene. If you are considering on selling you beloved vintage numbers to raise extra cash, then DON’T. Not unless you want to make a measly fiver for a fur jacket.

I shopped on Ebay before Christmas and last week my gorgeous shoes arrived in the post. Stuart Weitzman for Russell & Bromley shoes to be precise. They tick all the boxes for major SS10 trends. Cork shoe. Tick. Midi heel. Tick. Studs and diamante. Double tick. The only problem…they are a tinsy bit small. This is the only major flaw with Ebay. No trying on before hand. Anyways…I am gonna squeeze into them and suffer in the name of fashion.

Stuart Weitzman has his own label, full of stupendously high shoes, which are masterpieces. For over 30 years this man has been making and creating shoes to ‘make women happy’. Stu,you have made me super happy. I love my bargainistic shoes. £4.99 you say? Credit crunch bargain hunting done.

Jessie Penfold is one of those girls who has an infectious and mesmerising personality. Personally, I am holding on to everything she says as she emulates that ultimate girl power ego that you simply cannot resist.  With her shockingly blood red hair, sharp fringe, and a style that could possibly be inspired by Velma of Scooby-Doo fame fused with a slice of vintage punk rock, you definitely cant miss her.  By day, Jessie works at Boston Studio and by night she is working her magic as an illustrator.  With clients including Vice, Gash and FUN Magazine, this lady has a certain exciting buzz about her.

What are you doing right now?
Right this second; skiving off work.
In life; trying to be an illustrator, working a dull day job to pay the bills.

I love to draw because...
It takes me somewhere else. I know who I am and what I am about when I draw.

Professionally the first time I saw my work in a magazine.

Man Like Me

Yeah! Here is a band to watch kids...Man Like Me are gonna get you so be sure to see them at Glastonbury on the BBC Introducing stage on Friday at 1pm. The sun will shine when they play fo sho. Make sure you look out for their backing singer Jessie...she is super hot.

It seems that all exciting (potential) rock stars have parents who have brushed with fame in the past. Man Like Me is no different. Johnny's dad produced all of Madness' work back in the late '80s, so without a doubt he is an exciting talent to watch and take note from. This influence can been seen and heard, particularly in 'Single Dad', which has a playful Madness-esque rockabilly style.

Wills Moody Needs You!

If you are a vintage lover, charity shop hoarder, and all round rummager then you need to get with it and head to Wills Moody jumble sale. This isn't the sort of place where you will expect to see other peoples shit selling for 20p...no no no. Think vintage dresses, shoes, bags and jewellery that is someone's rubbish?! I find it hard to believe but yes people are selling their old tit for tat for a pittance. My best buy? An '80s pink jumpsuit that set me back £3. Oh yeeeeah!

If the credit crunch is biting then why not hire a table? They only cost a fiver and if your wardrobe it over flowing with clothes you never wear anymore then you could make a killing.

The next jumble sale is going to be on 20th June. See you then... we can all buy our outfits ready for Glastonbury the week after!

I Really Wanna Hula!

This Thursday, 11^th June, I am off to Hoopblast to shake, rattle and swirl those hips whilst simultaneously spinning a hoop. Forget the playground, this is where big girls come to play. I literally cannot wait. Balham Leisure Centre has never been so cosmopolitan.

Although hula hoops have graced our planet for approximately 3000 years, they became a worldwide phenomenon in the 1950s when 100 million were sold in the States in the summer of 1958. That is a lot of hoop-ing.

More recently, there has been a re-emergence of hula hopping due to the likes of circus productions such as La Clique, and Cirque du Soleil. Last week at Britney Spear’s show at the O2, she had acrobats, muscle men and hula hoop-ing girls gracing the stage strutting their stuff. I was inspired and like a small child, decided ‘I wanted to be like them too’. So here goes. Wish me luck.
